GOLD ROD BRILLIANT CHELMSFORD STAKES VICTORY NEW ZEALANDERS PROMINENT SUCCESS OF GOLDEN CHANCE (Received September 13, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 13 The defeat of Cuddle, who failed to gain a place in the Tramway Handicap, was a severe shock for a host of her admirers at Tattersall's Club's races at Randwick yesterday. She was well placed along with The Marno until Hearing the home turn, where .the latter left her .standing. Cuddle came home weakly in ninth place. The Marno and Panax fought out a thrilling finish and the former won by half-a-neck. The Marno carried 81b. over his Kpsom Handicap weight and meets Panax on 131b. better terms in that race. Gay Blonde distinguished heri self by coming smartly from well back to finish strongly in fifth place. Sporting Blood and Silver Streak neverthreatened danger. Ilium was a bad last. Mala's Whirlwind Finish New Zealand-bred horses were well to the fore in the other events, notably the Chelmsford Stakes, which was won by the brilliant Gold Rod, with 1 Mala and Custos in the minor places | and Silver Ring a good fourth. Mala's whirlwind finish was a much stronger topic than Gold Rod's victory. Galloping easily, Gold Rod turned into the 1 straight with several lengths' lead and just when the public was proclaiming an easy victory Mala unwound a ter- ' rific run to get within half-a-length of |-him. However, the consensus of opinion ! was that Gold Rod was eased up. | Custos showed much better form than i in the Canterbury Guineas. Sylvandale j and Lough Neagh were never prominent. M. McCarten stated after the | race that Gold Rod had nothing to ! fear from Mala and he expects the j former to acquit himself brilliantly in the Derby. Peter Pan's half-brother, Brazilian, by Brazen, won the first division of the • Novice Handicap in stylish fashion ! after playing up at the barrier. Cerne i Abbas was always handy and finished | a good fourth. She is expected to iinI prove. Irak, by Legionnaire—Lady JOva, I won the second division of the Novice | Handicap by three and a-half lengths, i which was regarded as a very creditable effort. The Athenian finished sixth in Brazilian's race, while Hands Up and Raepata were unplaced in Irak's division. A Stirring Duel After a stirring duel with Wykeham, Satmoth triumphed bv half-a-head in the Spring Handicap. Golden Treasure, although he seemed dangerous at one stage, was unable to sustain his run and finished a fair third. Golden Chance, skilfully ridden in a crowded field, won the Welter Handicap narrowly but impressively. On Parade ran wide out, but was always prominent and should do better shortly. Riposte was never prominent. The attendance was 26,500, which was 4000 more than last year. Results: — TRAMWAY HANDICAP, Of £500; 7 fur. THE MARNE, A. B.
