MILK CONTROL

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS NORTH SHORE PROTESTS A protest against the provisions of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Amendment Bill was made at a wellattended meeting of North Shore milk vendors, producer vendors, farmers and local body representatives, held in the Takapuna Borough Council Chambers last night. Mr. J. Guiniven, Mayor of Takapuna, presided. Speaking for the vendors, Mr. J. S. Matthews said the public did not appear to realise how serious and farreaching were the provisions of the bill. He did not wish to create ail impression that the vendors were antagonistic to the council. Before the council was formed affairs in the North Shore milk trade were chaotic. Thanks to the Milk Council, the trade now was in quite a happy state. Conditions had been improved all round. Nevertheless, the proposed amendments r.o the Milk Act were dangerous and entirely unnecessary, Mr. Matthews declared. If the bill was put through the House, Air. Matthews concluded, there was no reason at all why the North Shore supply should be kept separate from that of the city. Milk for North Shore consumers should come from th a North Shore farms. For the North Shore producers, Mr. J, Littlejohn made a further appeal for the separation of North Shore from the scheme. ' The amendments were defended by Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, Mayor <f Devonport, and North Shore consumers' representative on the Milk _ Council. Every member of the council had at heart the interests of tlio small man in all branches of the trade. "Even after hearing both sides of tho case, I still think the Milk Council has always taken tho side of the big men," remarked Mr. Guiniven. ' 1 think tho' North Shore trade should claim exclusion from the Milk Council scheme." . „ ~ T .... . , On the motion of Mr. Littlejohn, seconded by Mr. Guiniven, the meeting decided to embody its protests m a resolution to be forwarded to the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage.
