CYCLE RACE MISHAP

COMPETITOR IN HOSPITAL COLLISION WITH MOTOR-CAR While competing in a road cycle race on Saturday afternoon, a member of the Auckland Cycle Club, Mr. Slater Cosgrave Hayes, aged 30, married, of 141 Crummer Road, Grey Lynn, was involved in a collision with a motor-car and received head injuries and abrasions of the hands and legs. In the company of four other cyclists Mr. Hayes rode out of Penrose Road on to tho Mount Wellington concrete highway shortly after 4 p.m. The loose metal at the intersection made the control of the racing machines rather difficult and Mr. Hayes' cycle came into collision with a motor-car driven by Mr. P. F. Neale, of Victoria Street, Pukekohe, travelling in a southerly direction. The ' cyclist was thrown heavily and was picked tip in a dazed condition suffering from scalp wounds. He was taken to Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance and his condition last«night was stated to be satisfactory. His racing cycle was completely wrecked. FALL FROM MACHINE BOY'S CONDITION SERIOUS Suffering concussion when he fell from a bicycle on Friday, John Douglas Ogilvie, aged 12, who lives with his parents at 106 Calliope Road, was reported by the Auckland Hospital last night to have improved slightly in condition, although he was still on the seriously injured list.
