CLAIMS BY FARMERS
CAMBRIDGE WATER SUPPLY COMPENSATION SOUGHT [FBOM OtTB OWN CORRESPONDENT] CAMBRIDGE, Sunday "A bombshell has been dropped," said the Mayor of Cambridge, Mr. C. H. Priestley, when announcing that complications had arisen over the new spring at jSlaungatautari, from where the borough water supply comes. The Mayor said that everything had appeared completely settled when the spring had been commissioned last year. It was pointed oat that the borough had made an agreement with Mr. J. A. Wallace which had included the giving of water rights to him. Mr. Wallace has now lodged a claim for compensation, and similar claims, amounting to thousands of pounds, have been made by farmers below the spring for prospective loss of water.
"The alternative is to cut off all the farmers along the route and others outside, the borough, and maintain the original spring for the borough only," said Mr. Priestley, but added that ha would be reluctant to do so. The farmers concerned will meet the Cambridge Borough Council and discuss the situation.
