OTAGO CHALLENGE FAILS CANTERBURY TEAM'S SUCCESS [BY TELEGIUril —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHItISTCHUItCIT, Sunday Tlio Canterbury Soccer representatives scored a runaway win in their first game in defence of the English trophy when they defeated Otago by 7 goals to 0 yesterday. Although poor goalkeeplng by L. Holdon was partly responsible for Otago's heavy defeat, Canterbury was clearly superior in most departments. While team-work was a big factor in the win, G Smith, centre-forward in the winning side, was the hero of the day. He did not make a mistake, leading the attack with rare judgment. He had good support from 15. Hall and G. Ellis. The Otago team was weakened by (lie inability of some players to travel. It included five men who had not played in cither of the previous games this season against Canterbury. Canterbury's scorers in the first spell were Hall and Ellis. In the second spell Smith (2), Ellis (2) and Hall added gqals. DRAWN GAME AT HAMILTON [from OUR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday A team representing 11.M.5. Philomel visiled Hamilton yesterday and played a Hamilton representative eleven. The game ended in a draw, each side scoring four goals. Luke (3) and Brown scored for tho visitors, while Stewart (2), Webster and Fisher scored for Hamilton. Just as tho final whistle sounded Philomel put a ball through the net, but the goal was not counted.
