MR. D. K. BLAIR RETIRES : GATHERING IN WELLINGTON Many tributes to the worth of MrDavid K. Blair, of Wellington, who has retired from the position of sur* veyor to Lloyd's Register of Shipping, were paid last week at a large gathering in Wellington of civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, engineers and other officials of shipping compares, and many representatives of other interests. Mr, Justice Blair, a brother of Mr. D. K. Blair, was also present. Mr. Blair was the son of a former engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department. He gained his marine chief engineer's certificate (British Board of Trade) in 1895, and from 1899 to 1913 practised in Sydney a» consulting dredging engineer in partnership with Mr. C. E. Richardson, no* of Wellington. From about 1902 till 1921, Mr. Blair was surveyor to the British Corporation Register, and for the last 15 years he had held the important and responsible position of surveyor to Lloyd's Register of ShippingMr. Blair was elected a member of the Institute of Marine Engineers, London, in 1902, and was that idstitute'a vice-president in New ZealandHe was elected a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in 1908. and was appointed honorary corresponding member for that institute in 1925. He was elected a member of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers in 1924; he was vice-president of the society 1929-30, president 1931-32. and a member of the council 1932-35. Mr. F. W. Mac Lean, late c« iet engineer of railways, after paving * tribute to Mr. Blair, said it was not generally realised how much the saietj of travellers on the sea depended on the arduous and conscientious work or surveyors of ships. Mr. Blair had done his duty nobly and well. Mr. Mac Lean then presented Mr. Blair with a haniisome armchair and with a hall lamp: for Mrs. Blair, and also with an address on vellum signed by all those present "for remembrance and in token o abiding friendship." .
