MISUSE OF RED CROSS

COMPLAINT TO COUNCIL SIGNS IN PARK ROAD Advice that the use of the red cross emblem by any institution other than a medical division of armed forces was regarded as highly undesirable has been received from the Defence Department by the Newmarket Borough Council. The council some weeks ago erected in Park Road two signs presented by Mr. H. J. Butcher, each bearing a red cross on » white ground. Mr. Butcher had noticed the extensive use of these signs outside hospitals in Europe as a warning to motorists to avoid making unnecessary noise and thought they would serve a useful purpose outside the Auckland Hospital. The official communication received by the council indicated that legislation shortly would be introduced in all the countries that were contracting parties to the Geneva Convention to make illegal the misuse of the Red Cross. The matter has been referred to a committee of the council with power to act.
