UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
Sir, —The comparison Professor Sewell draws between the support given elsewhere to universities and that given here is most disquieting, especially to those of us who like to think that in education New Zealand has some cause for self-congratulation. If Professor Sewell's figures are correct, and I see no reason to doubt them, then it is high time we woke up and put our house in order. I like Professor Sewell's suggestion that our City Council should follow the English practice and make some contribution toward the upkeep and development of the college. If the City Council will give us a lead, however nominal, there will be individuals, I am sure, sufficiently public-spirited to follow it. R.D.
