AUGUST RAIN

TOTAL OVER 8 INCHES NEARLY TWICE THE AVERAGE FEATURES OF THE MONTH August wns a particularly wot month in Auckland, nearly, twice the average rainfall for this period having been experienced, according to the report of Mr. S. Odd features concerning tho sunshine recordings are that this August and last there was only one day without tho sun, and that tho third day was tho sunniest in both months, 9 hours 36 minutes being the maximum this year, as against 8 hours 12 minutes last year. Tho total amount was 155 hours 24 minutes last month, in comparison with 129 hours 51 minutes in August of last year. The moan maximum temperature in tho shade for tho past month was 58.75deg., compared with sG.B4deg. in August, 19.')5. Tho mean minimum was 47.42deg., as against 47.59deg. Tho mean temperature was 53.08deg., tho figure last year being 52.21dcg. Extreme maximum temperatures of 65.2deg. were recorded on August 15 and 29, and tho extreme minimum was 35.5deg. on August 2 and .3. Frosts or sJdeg. and sdcg. respectively were also recorded.

Barometric pressures wore fairly high during the month, and generally higher than those recorded during August, 1935. The mean was 30.003 in., and the maximum on August 3 was 30.429 in., compared with 30.453 in., the best recording a year ago. The minimum reading on August 31 was 29.610 in. Variable and generally moderate winds were experienced. On three days the wind rose to gale force.
