BOBBY CALF COLLECTION
UNECONOMIC COMPETITION WASTE OF VEHICLE MILEAGE [by telegraph OWN correspondent] TE AWAMUTU, Sunday Some interesting observations on the bobby calf trade were made at a conference at Te Awamutu between Mr. E. J. Phelan, licensing authority under the Transport Licensing Act for No. 1 (Auckland) district, and officers of the Waipa Carriers' Association. Mr. Phelan said that there was no doubt that the present conditions wero uneconomic and bad for the local authorities. He had found instances of as many as 12 lorries going along one road —a huge wastage of vehicle mileage and a needless pounding of the roads. Ho had conferred with the buyers and had given a hint that zoning would be enforced. " The local body cannot refuse a licence to this typo of carter," said Mr. Phelan, "but I can, and 1 will not tolerate such overlapping and waste."
Mr. A. Rowan said that in the Te Awamutu district last year it was estimated that 68,400 miles were travelled in collecting bobbv calves. At 7d a mile that meant a waste of £I2OO. Many of these trucks were not regularly licensed but paid only 2s 6d for a temporary licence.
Mr. Phelan said that no temporary licence for bobby calf collection would he issued if licensed carriers wore available. Conferences were now proceeding with the buyers, as the present conditions could not bo allowed to continue. It should bo noted that a temporary licence was intended for oneway loading only and did not confer the right to back-load.
