FIRE IN DYE WORKS

HEAVY LOSS OF CLOTHING PASSER-BY GIVES ALARM [by telegraph OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN, Sunday Unaware that a fire had broken out upstairs the staff of the City Dye Works, George Street, were normally engaged on the ground floor yesterday morning when a passer-b# entered to give the first information of the blazo. When the fire engines arrived tho fire had a good hold in a storeroom on the upper floor, but it was soon controlled and suppressed. Considerable damage resulted, but the actual extent could not bo ascertained. The stock consisted chiefly of 500 coats, frocks and other garments, which were destroyed. Tho storerooom was also badly damaged. The cause of the outbreak was believed to be a defective chimney.

The building, a two-storey brick structure, owned bv Mr. George Halliday, and the garments of customers of the company, were fully insured with local offices.

Slight damage was also caused by smoke and water in the London Tailoring Company's adjoining premises.
