PENALISING THRIFT

Sir, —" Penalised " should think himself very fortunate that he ha a been able to earn all the money that has enabled him to save enough to retire and keep himself in what to me would be comparative luxury. After all, when he has paid taxation he still has quite a respectable amount, substantially more than I receive in wages after working all the week. I am sure I would not mind changing places with him. How would he like to try to live on £.'3 JUs per week and keep a family? " Penalised " should, instead of grousing, be only to pleased to be one of the people who get enongh from tho " national income " to pay taxation. G.W.R.
