WAITAKERE PARK PLAN

COMMENTS BY MR. SEMPLE STOPPING UNSIGHTLY SHACKS []JY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Sa tn rd ay The hope was expressed by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Seinpie. to-day, that the Auckland City Council and other local bodies would combine to see that the wonderful scenic road that was to be built in the Waitakeres was not spoiled by the indiscriminate building of unsightly shacks and that any privately-owned land that was in flic area was purchased with a view to creating a public scenic domain that would be a breathing space for Auckland people for all time. "Much," said the Minister, "has been written and advocated in the direction of making the extensive area in the vicinity of the Waitakeres park to commemorate the coining centenary, and I fully subscribe to that idea. I have seen too many minint.uro colonies of sheds made of tin or motorear cases, and they are a blot on the landscape and out of keeping with otherwise beautiful surroundings. "Auckland deserves to have something worth while and the local bodies and societies interested should do everything to see that the Government's efforts in finding the bulk of the money to construct a magnificent drive, which will be a permanent, asset to the district, are not, nullified bv a few people who think nothing of the beauties and the nation, and are onlv concerned with their own selfish interests."
