MOTORIST KILLED
CRASH OVER BRIDGE ACCIDENT NEAR PAEROA INJURIES TO PASSENGER CAR ALMOST, WRECKED [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] PAEROA, Sunday A motor accident which resulted in the death of the driver and injuries to a passenger occurred on the Paeroa-Je Arolia road late yesterday afternoon. The victims were: — Mr. John Buckley, aged about 55, married. bridge contractor, employed by the Public Works Department at Hoc-o-tainui, who sufferod fatal injuries. Mr. John Gain, aged about 52, married, carpenter, who Buffered injuries to the head and body. His condition is not regarded as serious. The accident happened at the Waitoki Bridge, about six miles from Paeroa, where the road bends slightly. Deceased, who was driving an old model light car, was proceeding from Te Arolia to Paeroa. In turning to drive on to the bridge, the car collided with the railings, crashing through to a bank below. The machine was practically wrecked. Mr. J. Brown, who was driving a little ahead of the car, saw the accident in his driving mirror. He and his passengers hurried to release the two occupants of the wrecked vehicle, lhey summoned police and medical assistance, and Dr. W. W. Little, of Paeroa, and Constable Maiden were quickly on the scene. Deceased, who had suffered serious head injuries, was taken to the Paeroa Hospital, but died two hours after admission. Mr. Gain's injuries were not serious, and he was able to return homo after being treated at the hospital. Deceased's wifo lives at 22 Aitken Terrace, Glenmore, Kingsland. An inquest will be opened to-morrow.
