RICCARTON TRACK

FEOST DELAYS WORK SEVERAL JUMPERS SCHOOLED CLARION CALL SHOWS DASH [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCIIURCH, Saturday A large number of track watchers assembled at Riccarton to-day, but owing to tho effects of a heavy frost operations were delayed for about an hour and the state of the course proper did not allow of tlie usual interesting programme for final gallops. Tho surface became sloppy after thawing and very lew trainers showed an inclination to set their horses serious tasks. Tho main steeplechase course was again available, but only two horsos made use of it. However, some schooling over the hurdles brightened proceedings. Diamond, ridden by A. Jenkins, jumped over a round of inside steeplechase fences. He cleared tho first three brilliantly, but got in too close to the first of the brush double and blundered slightly over tho second. Ho did not have a groat deal of pace at the time and this, no doubt, accounted for his faulty effort. Burglar (G. Pidgway) negotiated a round of the main country at hunting pace. He appeared to be troubled by tho top brush and Cutts', but gave a fairly satisfactory display. Otaura King (W. McDowell) set out for a similar task, but after jumping the first two fences safely he fell over the first of tho kennels double. He was caught after a long delay and later negotiated the double well, completing tho circuit with a struggling effort over Cutts'. National Hurdles Trio Much interest was evinced in tho appearance of Jolly Beggar (P. Boalo), Clarion Call (A. Jenkins) and Silk Sox (l'\ Baker), who wore associated over six hurdles. Clarion Call jumped to the front at tho first hurdlo and, although ho was hold back to his mates on the flat, ho gained an advantage at every succeeding fence, his only doubtful effort being at the fifth fence, at which he took off too far. Jolly Beggar gave one of his usual sound displays, improving as the journey progressed, and lie was apparently not affected by Clarion Call's dashing tactics. Silk Sox made a bad jump at tho third fence through taking off with the other two and he repeated tho mistake at tho fifth, where lie lost his rider, who later put his mount over the last obstacle. Val Watch (W. Ronnie) had her first schooling since arriving over a week ago and she covered four hurdles well. She is certainly a speedy jumper. Travelling Agent (R. E, Thomson), attracted attention when ho paraded, but his work was confined to jumping two hurdles. He had on plenty of pace, and his effort was faultless.

Streamline (H. Turner) and Haere Tonu (S. Anderson) were to have been companions over six hurdles, but the latter lost ground at the first and Streamline ran right away from him. Haore Tonu jumped the last three obstacles well, but he could not get within reach of Streamline, who gave one of his smartest displays, marred to a certain extent by his usual inclination to reach for his jumps. Saltspray Goes Well Saltspray (A. McDonald) and Santoft were again companions over six hurdles. The former, who jumped brilliantly, held his mate safely throughout. The Smuggler (W. Cooper) and Signaller (N. Trillo) went over four hurdles, the former giving the better display. Redolent (F. Baker) again shaped well in a round of the hurdles and he should race prominently next week.
