WHITE ISLAND ACTIVITY.
Sir.—Some days ago it was reported that there was great activity at White Island. Actually the activity does not vary from one year's end to the other. Some contend that a north-west wind banks up a cloud of water dust, and this gives one the impression of p;reat activity. The truth of the matter is this varying atmospheric conditions make the constant activity conspicuous or inconspicuous. On a calm morning after a cold night every particle of ejected steam is mnrle visible ;m<l helps to rear a great column. Of course, act vity does vary to some extent. From much roaring. Big or Little Donald develops a sore throat, and when the afi'lir-ted one coughs, I would rarher be at a safe distance This redoubled nr-tivity is never seen from the mainland, kow. ever, and only a visit reveals the change that has been made. 1'.1.P.
