MODERN ART
Sir, —I would like to remind your correspondent, " R.0.X.," that what makes this old world so very interesting is the fact that Nature, in her wisdom, caters for all tastes. Can the Art Gallery authorities do better than emulate her? And if 1 gain as much aesthetic satisfaction from Mickey Mouse as " R.0.X." gets from studying " Sumnierseales,'! what does it matter? And who among us would be so presumptuous as to take upon himself the task of educating the public taste? Who would set the standard? I would further remind " R.0.X." that the brains and hands behind the pictures he so admires were once those of amateurs, which is surely a sound reason why present-day amateurs should bo encouraged. Another Whistler, another Rembrandt, may yet arise ... I have seen a woman moved to tears by one of Beethoven's divine melodies; I have also seen eyes made moist by "Mother Machree"; who is to say which emotion was deeper? Let " R.0.X." and his brethren learn tolerance and make due allowances for all tastes, no matter how low—or high. Noel.
