SCIENCE CONGRESS

GATHERING IN AUCKLAND SEVERAL HUNDRED VISITORS Several hundred visitors are expected in Auckland for the 23rd congress of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, which will he opened on January 12 by the Governor-General, Lord Galway. The general arrangements are in the hands of the permanent centra! committee in Australia, but the bulk of the work will naturally fall on the local officials, the joint honorary local secretaries, Professor C. C. Farr, of Canterbury College, and Mr. Gilbert Archcv, of the Auckland Museum, and the honorary local treasurer, Mr. A. T. Pycroft, of the Auckland Museum. The Auckland arrangements will probably include, besides daily meetings of the sections, Sir Douglas Mawson's presidential address, two evening lectures of interest to all sections, field excursions to places of scientific and scenic interest, two afternoon receptions and a conversazione. The New Zealand Government is giving official recognition to the congress and is affording generous support in travel concessions to the delegates and in undertaking the printing of circulars, handbooks and a report of the proceedings. The following local executive committee has been set up to deal with the arrangements for the conduct of the congress and the reception of the visitors:—-Sir Carrick Robertson (chairman), Sir Joseph Smith, Professor H. W. Segar, Mr. T. U. Wells, Mr. M. R. O'Shea and Mr. A. T. Pycroft. Other committees are: —Handbook: Mr. R. A. Kalla (chairman), Professors J. A. Bartrum and P. Burbidge, Mr. A. W. B. Powell. Entertainment: Sir Joseph Smith (chairman), Sir Cecil Leys, Messrs. F. C. Mappin and W. A. Fairclough, Lady Robertson. Publicity: Mr. A. G. Lunn (chairman), Professor F. P. Worley, Dr. E. P. Neale, Mr. E. Phillips Turner.
