INTOXICATED MOTORIST
OFFENCE AT OPOTIKI SUSPENSION FOR A YEAR [BY TKf/KGRAPH —OWN 'COKUEfirOXDK.NT] OPOTIKI, Tuesday On a charge of being in a state of intoxication while driving a inotor-car Tommy Hapi was disqualified from driving for a year and was fined. £5 in the Opotiki Magistrate's Court. Sergeant Miller, who prosecuted, said accused had been seen by the police in Opotiki and was warned that in his condition ho was not to drive the car. Someone else drove the car to Waiotahi, and accused demanded that he should take over the wheel, which he did. He drove only a short distance before he went into a ditch. Mr. East, who appeared for accused, said Hapi stopped to pick up some of his children and considered lie could drive all right. The lights failed, and lie ran off the road. He asked that Hapi's licence should not be taken away, as his livelihood was dependent on his driving.
The magistrate, in convicting accused, said others had to be considered.
