INDUSTRIAL LAWS
THE POSITION OF FOREMEN A RULING CHALLENGED Contrary to a recent ruling by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, the secretary of the Auckland Trades and Labour Council, Mr. H. Campbell, said yesterday that under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act foremen who do not work are exempt from the operations of the Act, whereas working foremen are subject to it.
It had been suggested by the Minister that all foremen were exempt from the provisions of the Act, he said, but that was incorrect. It was questionable if there were any foremen exempt, certainly not working foremen. Although foremen received more wages than the ordinary workman, that fact did not necessarily bring them outside the scope of the award.
