INCREASE OVER £650,000 FIVE-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN PROVISION FOR BUILDINGS [nv TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON. Tuesday An increased expenditure of over £650,000 is provided for in the Education Department estimates, £3,419,689 being allowed, against last year's vote of £2,759,652, which was over-expended by £35,446. Iho principal increases are in primary education, which is expected to cost about £300,000 more, secondary education and training of teachers, each of which accounts lor about £IOO,OOO more, and school buildings, for which £75,000 | more is allowed. Funds for School Committees Increased funds are provided for school committees, incidental expenses being set at £156,000. against an expenditure last year of only £103,647. There is a special provision of £16,000 for improvements to school grounds. Several concessions are made to secondary school pupils. To provide books in necessitous cases a grant of £IOOO is reinstated, while it is proposed to pay a boarding allowance and to convey pupils by road as in the caso of primary school pupils. A sum of £14,600 is allowed for board and £11,300 for road transport. Total expenditure on post-primary education is estimated at £695,377, against an expenditure of £539,483 last year, when tho vote was £579,773. Universities and Kindergartens

University education is allotted £86,619, against last year's figure of £74,823, of which £71,897 was spent. The Auckland University College allowance is £14,545, with an additional £1725 for the School of Engineering. This is in addition to endowment revenue, £2274. Provision is made for the granting of additional bursaries a;ul scholarships. A grant of £3500 is made to the Workers' Educational Association, it being stated that this restoration is necessary to enable the work to be maintained. The grant to freo kindergartens is practically doubled, an allowance of £6OOO being made, compared with last year's expenditure of £.'5065. The child welfare allocation is slightly higher at £134,790, while there are small increases in grants for the education of the blind, deaf and feeble-minded. BOUNTY OF THE STATE GRANTS TO LEGISLATORS [BY TELEGRAPH SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Tuesday The custom of granting special annuities to ex-members of tho Legislature, witlows of ex-members and other persons having special claims on tho Crown is continued, the appropriation in this year's estimates for the Pensions Department being £7586, against £577'J last year. Grants of £IOO each are to be made to the following ex-members of Parliament:—Messrs. F. N. liar tram. A. Bell, W. A. Chappie, J. S. Dickson. V. H. Potter, T. W. Rhodes and W. T. Wood. To Messrs. A. E. Glover, C. E. Major, G. W. Russell grants of £l2O each are provided, and for Mr. G. Witty, an ex-member of tho Legislative Council, tho grant is £lO2 5s 2d. Widows of ex-members of the Legislature who are to receive tho State bounty aro Lady Pomare, £150; Lady Fowlds, Lady Luke, Mrs. H. E. Holland and Mrs. M. Mills, £l2O each; Mrs. K. Colvin, Mrs. K. T. Dickie, Mrs. G. M. Earnshaw, Mrs. A. E. Ell, Mrs. M. Hall, Mrs. B. Hogg and Mrs. M. Horn, £IOO each; Mrs. E. H. Brown, £7B; Mrs. L. V. Kitchett and Mrs. E. M. McKenzie, £75 each. In the Internal Affairs Department estimates provision is made for a compassionate allowance of £4OO to the widow of the late Mr. P. A. do la Porrello, M.P. Provision is also made for a grant of £'J7 8s to Mrs. L. Hood, the widow of Captain Hood, who was lost while attempting to fly across the Tasman Sea.
