DEATH AT SCHOOL
MR. J. -L. I. NEWHOQK WELL-KNOWN SCIENCE MASTER Well known to more than one generation of Auckland Grammar School pupils, Mr. James Lawrence Imrie Newhook, died suddenly at the school resterday morning. Mr. Ncwhgok felt unwell earlier while teaching i class, anu he went to the teachers' commonroom where he died. The school was closed for the day. Mr. Newhook, who wa.s 56 years of age, received his early training aB a teacher at Newbury and Heading, under the London County Council. Coming to New Zealand, he taught for a time in primary schools, and at the beginning of 1911 joined the Auckland Grammar School staff as a science master, a position he had held ever since. He was a familiar figure to the thousands of boys who passed through the school during his service of more than a quarter of a century. A cricket enthusiast, Mr. Newhook took a keen interest for many years in the school cricket teams. He was very well known on Auckland's West Coast beaches, being a frequent visitor with friends and colleagues long before the locality attained its present popularity. He had suffered somewhat from illhealth in recent years, but had seemed quite well lately. Mr. Newhook is survived by his wife and three sons. Only yesterday morning, before going to school, Mr. Newhook, who was very interested in shortwave wireless, conducted a conversation with his eldest son, who has been studying veterinary work in England, and is at present on holiday in Berlin.
