FINE EXHIBITION

MOUNT ALBERT BUSTLED One of the best exhibitions of the season was provided by Manukau nnd Mount Albert in the principal . attraction. Manukau set about its work with great determination front the start and was all over its opponents. Mount Albert, was badly bustled, the barks making several errors in the face of fast raiding by the Manukau forwards. Ilemi started the scoring with a fine goal from a penalty. Soon afterwards Fickrang charged down a clearing kick and scored, llemi added the goal points and then kicked two more penalties in quick succession. With a lead of 11 points Manukau continued to bustle its opponents. Mount Albert was/gaining most of the ball from tho scrums, but Halliwcll, first five-eijrhths. repeatedly kicked. At other times mistakes in handling were quickly turned to advantage by the speed and anticipation of the Manukau backs and forwards.

Tho second spell was more evenly contested, tho Mount Albert forwards putting more dash/into their play, while they kept together much better than in the first half. Mount Albert addea two tries, but Manukau failed to score during the spell. The latter was decidedly unlucky when Trevathan, going at top, intercepted a pass, but was ruled offside with a clear field. It was a piece of very clever anticipation, which thoroughly deserved a Uy Hemi gave a sound display at fullback for Manukau, his powerful kicking and accurate handling being a great asset to the team. Broderick, a former Maori representative Bugby forward, played well on tho wing, his strong running being a feature. Mason, Mollis, Broughton and Mahima all did their full 6hare, but the outstanding back was Trevathan. Showing cleverness on attack he also defended splendidly. He fully deserves his inclusion in the J<<w Zealand team for the test malch next Saturday as he has been playing well throughout the season. The Manukau forwards were a fine set and a great all-round game was played by Pickrang. /Leading the forwards in fine style ho was always on tho ball and tackled soundly. He was ably supported by Gatilt and Watcne. Barry was not too certain at lullback for Mount Albert but he had a hard time on defence. Halsey was the best of the threequarters. while L. Schultz played well in- the five-eighths line, with limited opportunities, Wilsop did some clever work behind the scrum. Gunning, Petersen and Bickcrton stood out amon?- the forwards. Tries for Mount Albert were scored by Halsey and Gunning. Mr. W. Simpson was refereo.

DRAWN GAME PLAYED ' DEVONPORT AND CITY A fast, open game was witnessed between Devonport and City, which played the curtainraiser to the principal fixture. At this stage of the game Citywas leading and definitely on top. The City backs opened the attack early in the game and threw the ball about to good advantage. From a nice passing bout, in which Spiro was' prominent, Porteous raced away and Brown scored a good try. The Devonport forwards were superior in the scrums and frequently won the ball. Kerr was in good form at fullback and drove City back by wellplaced line-kicks. Brown raced smartly down the line and gathered a kick by Kerr and Tawhiri scored. Just beforo half-time, L. Scott snapped up and passed to Sowter, who scored. Devonport had the better of the early part of the second half and kept City on defence. On one occasion Hunt made a good opening and passed to Hall, who looked certain to score, bat Brown came fast and pushed the Devonport winger into touch. In a City passing 'bout, Scott came in from the wing arid intercepted to score an easy try. McLaughlin made a nico opening a few minutes later and had the defence beaten, but he passed infield when Brown had a clear run in on the wing. City mad? good efforts to regain the lead but had to be satisfied with a drawn game, as the result of a good penalty goal by Dufty. For Devonport Kerr played a fine game at fullback. His fielding was excellent and good kicking often sot Devonport out or difficulties. L. Scott played a good game on the wing, although his defence was weak on occasion.';. Hunt and Rhodes were prominent on attack, while Cowan got through a lot, of useful work behind, the scrum. Sowter was the outstanding forward, while Simpson, h. Scott and Hallows were good workers Hughes, who was moved to to replace Dufty. was the weak City hack. Dufty did useful work at five-eighths, although he kirked too much on occasions brown pi,i /eel with das! on the, wing and he and rnwhai were the best hacks.
