RETIREMENT FROM SEA

CAPTAIN R. B. DENNISTON APPOINTMENT AS PILOT After nearly 26 years of seagoing in ships of tho Union Steam Sln'p Company of New Zealand, Limited, during which he rose from cadet to master under the Company's house-flag, Captain I{. B. Denniston has resigned to take up an appointment as a pilot in the Port Phillip pilotage service at Melbourne. Captain Denniston was born at Perth, Western Australia, in 181)5, being educated partly in that city and partly in Dunedin. Ho was appointed a cadet in the Union Companj r 's training ship Dartford in October, 1910, and completed his indentures in the Aparima in March, 1915.

He joined the company's service as third officer of the Pukaki on April 1, 1915, and served in various vessels until his appointment as Second officer of the Tofua in February, 1918. Ho served in the Makura and Niagara in that capacity during the next six years, and in September, 1924, was sent home to join the Aorangi as senior second officer, and remained in that vessel for nearly two years. In July, 1920. ho was promoted chief officer of tho Waiotapu, later serving in the Kawatiri, Kaiwarra and Hauraki, before transferring to the Makura in February, 1929. Subsequently he served in the Marama, Tahiti and Niagara (threo years). Captain Denniston was appointed master of the Kowhai on October 19, 1984, and subsequently held command of the Karepo, Waitaki and Gabriella. It is understood that ho will assume his now duties during this week.
