BUSINESS IN MAY HIGH LEVEL OF ACTIVITY AMPLE BANKING FUNDS Reviewing business returns for May, the Government Statistician states that internal activity, gauged by the volume of cheque transactions and the active note circulation, was on a lower level than in April, but "substantially higher than in Hay during any of the preceding years." While the actual peak level for fixed deposits with the banks was passed two years ago, the trend of deposits on current account has remained buoyant, partly a reflection of improving business activity, and partly as a result of the superabundance of banking funds. The greatly-increased realisations at wool sales held during the season just passed have also contributed materially to the recent buoyancy of funds on current account. Some diminution may bo expected during the next few months with the slackening of activity in the primary producing industries. WHEAT IN AUSTRALIA BUOYANCY OF MARKET RECORD PRICE SINCE 1930 (Received July 12. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 12 Under the impetus of rising values and options overseas the Sydney wheat market yesterday gained another penny a bushel, bringing the price to the highest level in Sydney since 1930. Immediate prospects point to still further rises, Bagged were offered a«t 4s a bushel, and grain in the country at 3s 5Jd, equal to about 4s in Sydney. While tho drought is ruining American crops, reports state that European crops are being spoilt by an excess of rain. The price in Melbourne also reached Sydney's record figure. Experts state that the buoyant market is a augury for the coming season, when approximately .50,000,000 bushels of grain should bo available for the market if the season continues to develop favourably. This would represent a net return of about to New South Wales farmers.

AMERICAN CROPS EFFECT OF THIS DROUGHT (Received July I'J, 5.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July Crop conditions on July 1 wore bettor than expected, says the Department of Agriculture in its monthly estimate, issued to-day, and the 193G wheat production should he greater than that of 1935. Maize crops should be only slightly less. Since July 1, however, 10 days of blistering heat have caused damage and experts are of tho opinion that the Government's predictions will not be realised. The report estimated the. prospective wheat yield at 638,000,000 bushels, compared with 623,000,000 in 19:35. WHOLESALE EGG PRICES FURTHER REDUCTION MADE Wholesale prices for lien eggs in Auckland arc Id a dozen lower, duck eggs being unchanged. Now rates announced by tho Auckland Kgg Marketing Committee nro as follows: —Hon, first grade, Is GJd a dozen; 1J grade, Is 5Jd; C grade, Is 2jd; duck, Is GJd, Is sjd, Is 2.} d. Tho committee points out that the egg market has not, as in former years, been disorganised by sudden large fails in prices when supplies increased at tho beginning of tho season. The committee has spread the effects of tho increase by a gradual lowering of the price-lovel, so that tho tone of the market has not boon seriously impaired. This policy is to bo continued.
