THE OPOTIKI BAR
SILTING CAUSES DELAYS [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] OrOTIKI, Saturday The silting of the Opotiki bar has been causing considerable difficulty to shipping during the last few months, and there have been numerous delays in the arrival of the usual boats from Auckland. The Northern Company's weekly vessel, which left Auckland early last week, was delayed for a week owing to lack of water on the bar. Use has again been made of the Kutarere Wharf on the Ohiwa Harbour, where a cargo of fertiliser for Opotiki was unloaded. Shopkeepers have been considerably hampered owing to the depletion of stocks. The condition of the bar is unlikely to improve to any extent until a heavy fresh occurs in the rivers. Heavy storms during the year have been chiefly responsible for the sanding up of the harbour entrance.
