LORD HUGH CECIL

RESIGNATION IMPENDING APPOINTED PROVOST OF ETON (Received July 10, 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, July It is understood that Lord Hugh Cecil, who has been appointed Provost of Eton in succession to the late Dr. Montagu James, intends to resign from the House of Conmlons, where for the last 26 years he has represented Oxford University. With a break of only four years, he has been in Parliament for 41 years. Although the post Lord Cecil has accepted docs not necessitate his icsignation, ho feels that it would not permit him to givq enough time to his Parliamentary duties.

Lord Hugh Cecil is the son of the third Marquess of Salisbury, who was Conservative Prime Minister and the opponent of Gladstone. He was born in 1860 and was educated at Eton and Oxford. He first became an M.P. in 1895 and in 1902 he joined a group ot young and brilliant Conservatives and his independent views kept him from holding office. In 1906 lie lost his seat and was not re-elected until 1910. In the Great War Lord Cecil qualified as a pilot of the Royal Flying Corps and in 1916 he became a member ot the commission which inquired into the Mesopotamia expedition. When the Church Assembly came into existence in 1920, Lord Cecil, who is a strong supporter of the Anglican Church, became one of its most active members. He was made a Privy Counsellor in 1918.
