MOTOR TAXATION FUNDS

PROPOSED HOSPITAL AID OPPOSITION IN WELLINGTON [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Tuesday The suggestion that hospital boards should seek some measure of relief from motor taxation funds, in view of the high traffic accident rate in New Zealand, was criticised by members of Oie executive of the Automobile Association (Wellington) last night. While members expressed a sympathetic view toward hospital boards, they were strongly opposed to tho idea of the exploitation of the petrol fund for this purpose. J;lr. E, A. Batt said tho position would bo serious if all the hospital boards in the country were to receive foes from the petrol tax. He thought tho liability should fall on the insurance companies. This had been advocated by tho North Island Motor Union in tiie past. Mr. E. P. Hay said recovery in accident cases must depend on the degroe of negligence. It would bo quite unjust, however, that hospitals should bo protected under the petrol tax for accidents on which they could not recover otherwise.

It was decided to set up a sub-com-

mittee to investigate the position and to prepare a statement for publication.
