CLUB DELEGATES CRITICISED
FAILURE TO ATTEND MEETING
Strong resentment was expressed at a special meeting of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Swimming Association last night at tho failure of delegates of the Mount Eden Club to attend, after tho club itself had lodged a protest that caused tho meeting to bo convened. The club had questioned tho legality of tho centre's decision at tho previous meeting to go into recess for the winter months.
Tho management" committee of the contro received tho club's protest and referred it to tho full centre, instructing the secretary, Mr. J. R. Miller, to conveno a special meeting. When this opened about half tho delegates were present.
Tho chairman, Mr. T. C. HobbsJones, recalled tho contro's decision and explained that tho meeting was being held to enable delegates to reconsider it and also to give tho Mount Eden Club an opportunity of stating reasons for its protests. Ho drew attention to the fact that tho Mount Eden Club's delegates, Messrs. H. W. Moore and R. M. Sheflield, were not present, in spite of the fact that the meeting was specially for their club's benefit. Ho mentioned, however, tlmt Mr. Moore would not bo entitled to take part in the discussions, having forfeited his seat through being absent without excuse from more than two consecutive meetings.
A little later, Mr. R. B. Frankham joined the meeting as Mr. Moore's proxy. Tho chairman ruled that, as Mr. Moore's seat had been forfeited, Mr. Frankham could not act or vote. Mr. Miller said that tho management committee had been meeting regularly, and that, in accordance with tho centre's resolution, he would not hesitate to call a full meeting if any matter arose to warrant it.
Mr. F. W. Grey reported having obtained the opinion qf the centre's solicitor, which was that its decision was in order. "A joke has been played upon us, and wo should take stops to prevent a repetition," said Sir. Grey. Replying to a question, Mr. Frankham said that Mr. Moore could not coino to the meeting on account of his employment, and that ho himself had no knowledge of the reasons for the club's complaint. M essrs. Miller and Hobbs-Jones expressed regret that the delegates present had been subjected to needless expense and inconvenience. Finally, on the motion of Mr. 11. Moore, the centre decided to place on record its objection to the general obstructive attitude of the Mount Eden Club during tho past season.
It was also agreed to notify Mr. H. W. Moore that ho no longer held his seat.
