NINE MEN DROWNED
RUSSIAN SCIENTISTS CAPSIZE OF OPEN BOAT MOSCOW, Jnly 6 After watching nine companions succumb from exposure one by one in an open boat in Arctic seas, Ivan Khyukoff, sole survivor of a Soviet scientific expedition, was picked up by a Russian ship. He related how the party's boat capsized in a storm in Barents Sea (north of Lapland) after leaving the survey ship Toros.
One man was drowned and the remainder righted the boat, climbed in and baled her out with their bare hands. Equipment and provisions were lost. Khyukoff, who was washed overboard many times, eventually managed to lash his arm to a thwart.
The Government has given bonuses and granted pensions to the families of the victims.
