YOUNG FLIER'S DEATH
MR. LYONS' TRIBUTE AUSTRALIA'S SYMPATHY CANBERRA. July 6 "I regret exceedingly that yet another of Australia's great airmen has gone to his death," said the Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons last evening, in referring to the crash in which Mr. C. J. Melrose was killed. He said that Mr. Melrose had won considerable fame in his brief career. Not the least valuable of his achievements was his skilful search for Sir Charles Kingsford Smith last year.
The sympathy of all Australia would go to the young flier's devoted mother. The Premier of South Australia, Mr. It. L. Butler, says Mr. Melrose will be given a State funeral if his body is taken to Adelaide. Otherwise a State Minister will be sent to Melbourne to represent the Government. No decision was made last night owing to the distressed condition of Mrs. Melrose, mother of the deceased. SORROW IN ENGLAND SYMPATHETIC PRESS (Received July 6, 5.25 p.m.) LONDON, July 5 The news of the death of Mr. Melrose caused sorrow in English aviation circles.
The press pays sympathetic tributes to Mr. Melrose. The Daily Telegraph says ho was a charming young man who refused to be lionised.
