YOUNG COMPETITORS DIVERS FROM BRITAIN (Received July 0, 5.25 p.m.) LONDON, July 6 The selectors of the British Olympic team have chosen Miss 13. J. Slade and Fred Hodges, both aged 14, to compete respectively in the women's and the men's springboard diving events. The Football Association has decided to send a team to the Olympiad, subject to certain assurances. TWO NEW RECORDS PERFORMANCES IN AMERICA (Received July 6. 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 5 The Olympic trials in New York today produced two world's records. Miss Helen Stephens, of Rhode Island, a farm girl, ran 100 metres in 11 7-10s and George Varoff, pole vaulter, cleared 14ft. '6Jin. The previous world's and Olympic record for the women's 100 metres event was 11 9-10s by Miss S. Walastewicz. Poland. The previous pole vault record was 14ft. llin. by W. Miller, United States. Both performances were at the 1932 Olympio Games.
