FIFTY YEARS AGO
UNEMPLOYED RELIEF MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY Relief works for the unemployed of the Dominion, and their bearing on the construction of the Main Trunk railway, are shown to have occupied the attention of authorities 50 years ago, according to the following extract, from the New Zealand Herald of July 7, 1886: "The Trades and Labour Council recently communicated with the Minister of Public Works in reference to relief works for the unemployed. A telegram has been received stating that advertisements have already been issued inviting tenders for works which are to lie contracted for as soon as estimates are passed by Parliament. As the only tender for work advertised is the Te Kuiti contract, on the North Island Trunk Line, the telegram is regarded by the Council as being evasive aad unsatisfactory."
