WAGES ON FARMS

Sir, —In the Herald of July 2, 1 noticed a statement of the probable rate of wages for farm labourers under the guaranteed price, a rise of 5s per week for every half-penny increase in the price of butter-fat over lid per lb. A farmer sending to the factory, say, 24,0001b. of butter-fat employs three labourers. At lid per lb the wages paid would be a total of £175 10s, as against with butter-fat at Is lid, a total of £370. The extra amount received by the farmer is £250, but after paying the higher wages he is left with the large sum of £54 10s, and this will be more than Swallowed up by the higher cost of living. If the price is Is 6d a lb. it will not help the farmer one iota if the above is anything like the scale of wages to be paid. Bail Up.
