The hours over the week are reduced bv five and a-half.
With a view to considering later whether it would be practicable to close the shops all day on Satur. days, the meeting appointed delegates to wait on the Martha Gold Mining Company (Waihi), Limited, which it by far the largest employee in the district, to see whether the company was agreeable to pay its wages on Thursdays instead of Fridays. When the delegates approached the mine superintendent, Mr. H. W. Hop. kins, however, they were told that for various reasons, which were given, the company could not entertain the idea of altering the rav-day.
