AWAPUNI DOINGS

HORSES' ENGAGEMENTS

DEPARTURE OF DUNGARVAN FOREST GLOW JUMPS WELL [fiiom our own correspondent"] I'ALMERSTON NORTH, Saturday A frost, following upon the rain of the past few days, left the tracks at Awapuni very heavy for this morning's operations. However, with bright sunshine now prevailing, the indications are that improved conditions will soon be experienced. Dungarvan, accompanied by Dawning Light, left for Trentham this morning. Both are in excellent order and they will hjtve friends in their engagements. Nothing definite has been announced ;is to which race the former will start in, but it is generally presumed that it will bo the Stewards' Handicap. Dawning Light will contest the Trial Plate 011 the second day. Both will be ridden by W. J. Broughton. Saltspray (A. McDonald) was sent n round over four fences, pulling hard in the early stages. Ho jumped quite satisfactorily and a little improvement 011. his Wanganui performance should make him a distinct possibility for the jumping events at Trentham. Forest Glow (C. Thomson) and Tangled (W. J. McDowell) negotiated a couple of rounds of the steeplechase fences. They kept on terms on the initial circuit, but thereafter Tangled had to be shaken up to keep with his companion, who was fencing the faster. Forest Glow was doing it well at the close of the bout, during which a solid pace was maintained all the nay. 110 should do better at Trentham than at Wanganui. Cordon (W. J. McJ)owell), who figures in the Hack Steeplechase, went a couple of rounds alone. The Littlo England—Chevron gelding, who is a newcomer to L. Knapp's string, having previously been a member of J. F. Tutehen's team in the north, went off at a fast clip, but ho was tiring at. the end.

The two steeplechase candidates from Mrs. McDonald's stable, Manawatu (W. J. Broughton) and Cometra (S. Anderson) were restricted to a six furlongs gallop, the last half-mile being left behind in 545. Cometra has had plenty of racing, and, with 9.4, she should make her presence felt in the Marin Hack and Hunters' Steeples, for she was going very well when she fell about half a mile from home in the Wanganui Steeplechase. Riding engagements announced for the Wellington meeting are:— W. J. McDowell. —Cordon.

S. Anderson. —Contract, Mister Quex. A. W. McDonald. —Saltspray, Manawatu, Cometra. W. J. Broughton.—De Trop, Dungarvan, Dawning Light (second day). C. Thomson.—Forest Glow, Beau Gallante Red Sun, Enoknoroa, Tangled, Aiguille.
