THISTLE SUCCESSFUL

PONSONBY ELIMINATED Ponsonby and Thistle met In the local final of the Chatham Cup competition ut Blandford Park on Saturday, tho ground being in a rather heavy condition. Thistle, showing improved form, accounted for its opponents in a convincing manner. Tho play was fast and interesting throughout, both teams exploiting open and attractive methods. Thistle was concise jn its inov"ments, whilo its forwards were inuch nuni> accurate in their finishing. Ponsonby saw a great deal of the play, but, as on ether occaßlons this season, it could not take advantage of its opportunities. Thistle had a three-goal lead for the greater part of the time, Ponsonby securing its only goal a few minutes before the final whistle A. Watson was more confident in the Thistle goal than in previous matches, but he has still to show tho form that won him representative honours last season. The backs, Wiseman and Williams, were sound in their tackling, whilo they kicked with judgment and gavo their forwards every opportunity. Wright stood out in the half line for good constructive play, while ho received valuable support from w. Watson and Kennedy. A new player in the Thistle front line was Wallace, who showed some pretty touches and opened up tho "play nicely for Kay. Wood was outstanding on tho right wing, revealing sliced nnd accurate footwork. Kay was in a dangerous mood, securing two good goals, whilo Angus also adjusted himself much better than usual. A safe display was given by Smith in Ponsonby's goal, while Haggett and Jones, the fullbacks, were responsible for very solid work. Chapman nnd Masters were the best of the halves, both defending stubbornly ami opening up the play nicely. Hut for its weak finishing, the Ponsonby vanguard played attractive football. Caisley anil Mulholland were prominent for good constructive work, whilo Innes was dangerous at centreforward.

Goals were scored for Thistle by Kay ('_>> and Angus, whilo Mulholland netted for the losers. Mr. A. Kyle was referee.
