RAILWAY FREIGHT RATES
DIFFERENTIAL SYSTEM UNEASINESS OF MINISTER [nY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] TIMARU, Saturday The injustice done to Timaru by the application of differential railway rates was placed before the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. 0. Sullivan, by a deputation from the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce on Saturday. The Minister said he was not happy regarding the differential rates which the department was forced to adopt to meet merciless and relentless competition on land and sea. If the policy of differential rates had not been introduced the railways would have been wiped out, the Minister said. It was hoped that the new policy of co-ordination of the transport services as affecting rail, road, air and perhaps later seaways, would result in many existing anomalies being abolished.
