STREET LIGHTING
ALLEGED HIGH CHARGES
LOCAL BODIES* INTEREST
Keen interest in the One Tree Hill Borough Council's report concerning the Auckland Electric-Power Board's alleged excessive charges for street lighting was evinced at the annual meeting of the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association last night. It was decided to obtain copies of the report for each affiliated local body and to discuss the matter at a special meeting of the association to bo held at an early date.
Tha president, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, who also is Mayor of One Tree Hill, gave an outline cf the report, which was published in the Herald yesterday. His council had considered the information so startling that it had been decided to refer it to the association for discussion. >Ho did not desire that tho report should bo discussed that night, but preferred that consideration should bo postponed until each local body had had an opportunity to examine it separately. Colloctively, added Mr. Goldstine, tlicy should submit the information to the Power Board, and tho board should bo given every opportunity to answer the charges. It seemed doubtful, however, whether the board could do that, because it would bo very difficult for it to get over the figures that would be presented. Several speakers congratulated the One Treo Hill Council oil bringing forward the matter, expressing the opinion that it was well worthy of discussion. It was pointed out that while the Waitemata Electric-Power Board's charges wore- lower than those of the Auckland board, they wore, however, higher than charges in other parts of New Zealand. The information contained in the report might, therefore, be of use in possible future negotiations with that board.
