CITY COUNCIL SALARIES
PROCESS OF RESTORATION
BENEFIT TO LOWER GRADES
In deciding to restore the wages all officers and employees to the rates obtaining before the first cuts were imposed the Auckland City Council has completed a process that has been going on for the past two years. In April, 1934, a partial restoration affecting all employees was made and since that time the lower-paid members of the staff have benefited by having their wages brought up to the 19.31 level. By the latest decision all officers and employees who salaries or wages had not been fully restored are having them restored in full as from June 1. Some of the officers who are now to have their rates restored have been subject to fairly substantial reductions for the past four years. The first cut of 10 per' cent, which was made in July, 1931, applied to all wages and salaries. In May of the next year the council decided on additionai reductions in respect of all salaries of £450 a year and over. In the case of men receiving from £l5O to £495 the extra cut amounted to 5 per cent of the salary then being paid. Men receiving from £496 to £IOOO had a further reduction of 7£ per cent and all over £IOOO were reduced a further 12J per cent. >. The process of restoring wages has been gradual. A restoration of 5 per cent on the first £250 of all wages was made in April, 1934. In June of the following year the cuts were restored in full to all persons in the employ of the council who were receiving not more than £'3oo a year, and in December of the same year this concession was extended to those in receipt of not more t:ian £4OO.
