STAY-IN STRIKE
BRITISH CIVIL SERVICE
INCREASED PAY FOR CLERKS
(Received June 23, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, June 27 The Daily Mail says the British Civil Service is considering a stay-in strike unless the Treasury agrees to an increase in pay for departmental clerks. The departments affected are: The War Office, the Air Ministry, the Admiralty, the Home Office and the Board of
Trade, but efforts are being made to drag in the Whole of the Civil Service ; as "sympathising," including the officials in Government dockyards. The Civil Service Clerical Association has invited the eminent barrister, Sir William Jowitt, to state if a stay-in strike is legal in Britain, secondly, if the position of a civil servant differs from that of any other worker in relation to a stay-in strike, and thirdly, if i£ is legal for the union to order its members to "go slow," or "work to - rule."
The association's action, it is stated, • will depend upon Sir William's opinions.
