NEW WATER MAINS

IMPROVING SUPPLIES WESTFIELD AND TAMAKI PROGRESS OF OPERATIONS Extensions and improvements to the city water reticulation and supply system aro proceeding at two points. One of the works involves the laying of a ten-inch main, which is to supply city water to the industrial area at Westfleld and the other is the erection of a water tower on the high ground behind St. Heliers Bay to supply the low levels on the eastern suburbs. The Westfiekl main is being laid along the railway ground parallel to the railway line. A start was made about a month ago near the Green Lane railway station and the gangs have nearly reached the Penrose station. There aro 18 men engaged on this work and they had been placing from 12 to 15 pipes in position each day. Each pipe is 25ft. 'long. However, rocky formation has been encountered at several points between Ellerslio and Penrose and this lias tended to retard progress. It is anticipated that the connection with Westfleld will be mado before the end of August. Auother gang has been working in Remuera Road, replacing the old sixinch main with a new eight-inch main in the sections from Mount Hobson to Orakei Road. This gang has now boon transferred to St. Heliers, where some connecting links are to be put in along some of the back streets to avoid dead-ends and improve tho circulation. This is part of the plan to separate the low level area, which will bo supplied from the water tower, from tho high levels, which will draw supplies from Mount Hobson reservoir. When furthor supplies of pipes aro received a start will be made with the laying of a main in Shore Road, which is to carry city water from the Khyber Pass Reservoir by gravitation to the existing main on tho Orakei suburb. This will in turn be linked with an existing main in the Mission Bay, Kohimarama and St. Heliers districts and will supply tho new tower reservoir. The two new works under construction will eventually involve tho construction of a largo main from the Khyber Pass Reservoir to the Newmarket railway station yards. There it will branch, ono section following the railway line to Green Lane to connect with the Westfield main and the other will be taken down Middleton Road to link up with tho new main in Shore Road.
