FAREWELL GATHERINGS Interesting excerpts from professor Roerich's book "Altai Himalayas" provided the main theme of an address given by Miss Graham, of England, to members of the Rotorua Travel Club thfu week. For the past twelve years, Miss Graham has lived in India acting as inspectress of schools, and therefore she was able to introduce into her talk many true personal experiences. The hostesses were: Miss J. Wilson and Miss L. Harris. Visitors to the club wero Miss MacPherson (England), Mrs. Entwistle, (Wellington), Mrs. Kemeys, and Mrs. Andrew (Rotorua). In aid of the candidature of Mr. D. Cambie in the King Carnival contest, a most successful dance was held at the Hose Hall, Mamaku, this week. Tho ballroom had been entirely decorated in midnight blue streamers, and created a attractive setting for the many dancers who thronged tho floor. Items were given by Miss Joan Urquhart and Mr. B: Constant. At the close of the annual meeting of the St. John's Presbyterian Missionary Union, held in St. John's Hall last week, opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs. E. Robertson, the past president, who is leaving shortly on a visit, abroad. Eulogistic reference was made by several speakers to the long years of splendid service given by Mrs. Robertson for the church and community. A small presentation was made to the guest of honour by the president, Mrs. B. 31. Green, and she was also the recipient of a bouquet of violets from the Ladies' Guild which was represented by its president, Mrs. W. Jones. On a previous occasion, Miss E. Anoni, who is accompanying her aunt, Mrs. Robertson, was presented with a leather handkerchief sachet, a gift from the senior combined Bible classes. An enjoyable gift evening was given recently by Mrs. C. J. Harris and Mrs. J. H. Bear at the former's home, in honour of Miss Jean Winslade whose marriage took place this week. Two competitions interspersed between tho dancing were won by Miss L. Harris and Mrs. Brewster. Among those present were: Mrs. T. Winslade, Mrs. Shultz, Mrs. A. F. Moncur, Mrs. Powell Mrs. Price, Mrs. McKone (Auckland), Misses L. and 0. Harris, Miss 0. Shultz, Miss G. Tanner, Miss J. Wallace, Miss E. Manson, Miss Powell, Miss E. Winslade, Miss L. Winslade. Mrs. Nelson Clay, of Meade Street, returned this week from an extended holiday in Vancouver. Mrs. E. L. Barker, of Ranolf Avenue, left this week to compete in the Akarana golf tournament held in Auckland this week. Mrs. McKone, of Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. T. Winslade, of Haupapa Street. Mrs. P. J. Sherriff, of Seddon St., has returned from a visit to Auckland. Mrs. Spinier, of Takapuna, is spending a golfing holiday in Rotor'.ia. Mrs. Rutherford, and Miss Betty Ruther/ord, of Canterbury, spent the night in Rotorua this week, on their return home after attending the winter race meeting in Auckland. Mrs. J. Thomas, and Miss H. M. Dannefaerd, of Rotorua, left this week for Auckland, where they will take part in the Akarana golf tournament. Mrs. J. Forbes, of Te Aroha, was a visitor to Rotorua this week to attend the Tregear-Winslade wedding. Miss S. Marcroft, of Matamata, is the of Miss D. Vernall, of Ranolf Avenue, during her visit to Rotorua. At the fortnightly meeting of the literary, circle of the Rotorua Women's Club, which was held at the home of Mrs. ?. Gibbs, the interesting threeact "Brown Sugar" was read.
