BOOKSELLER CHARGED
CONTENTIONS BY COUNSEL COURT RESERVES DECISION A plea that public opinion had changed considerably since the midVictorian era was made by Mr. [''inlay when appearing on behalf of a city bookseller, W. I'. G. Ladd, who was charged in the Police Court yesterday with selling indecent documents. The elmrges referred to the covers of two American magazines which had been sold to a detective.
Mr. Fin lay said that sales of magazines of the type referred to totalled £ 1 000 a week. Pages containing certain types of advertisements were removed bv the Customs Department, and the fact that the magazines received some sort of censorship misled wholesalers and retailors. That, however, was no excuse if the publications were held to be indecent.
Counsel submitted there was nothing salacious in the magazines, and from a common-sense view they were not indecent within the meaning of the Art. The magistrate. Mr. W. It. McKean, reserved his decision.
