After having cleared three fences in' a school with • Welbeclj at recently, the Dommioipbred Countermarch, an aged son of Winning Hit, who went over to 'Australia some years ago, fell heavily at the third of the treble in the straight and broke his i nock. A prominent jockey of half a century ago, Mr. W. Butler, died at Shannon Inst week, aged 72. He won the C.J.C. Handicap of ISS2 on Welcome Jack, this being the last timo the race was run before being renamed the New Zealand Cup. In later years Mr. Jiutier trained at Wanganui. Clarion Call, winner of the Pemuera Hurdles, has been sent back to Marton. The Hunting Song gelding may be taken to Melbourne for jumping events, and Oratory, who has been entered for spring races in Sydney and Melbourne, may accompany him. The Smuggler can claim the distinction of having been placed in two major events in which record times have been run. He was third when Palantua won the New. Zealand Cup in then record .time for Australia and the Dominion of 3.22 1-5, while he also beat the, existing record for the Great Northern Hurdles last Saturday in running second to Prince of Orange.

Not many supporters were counted by Mister Quex in the Waitohu Handicap at o.taki, for there was nothing on the records to indicate him as a likely ■winner. Ho is by Lord Quex from a halfsister to Master Reynard, a disappointing horse, but probably the best of the family founded by the English-bred inaro Bayonne. Mister Quex is rising seven years. This is his first victory, but ho has done very little racing. A. J. Julian, trainer of Prince of Orange, established a fine record as .a cross-country rider. Among the winners of important races he rode were Loch Fvne in the Great Northern Steeples, Audnx in the Hawke's Bay Steeples, also The Spaniard in that race and the Napier Steeples, Jack l'ofc in the Wanganui Steeples, Haydn in the .Wellington Steeples, 'as well as Nappcr in the Great Northern Hurdles, Tresham and Morning in the Grand National Hurdles.
