Trailer and Black Frost pleased when registering 1.3J for five furlongs. The latter will not race.at Hastings, but is being kept in reserve for the W.R.C. Trial Handicap next month. Hunting Jay gives every indication of being about to strike his best form. He pulled very hard throughout his five furlongs in 1.7. Cotsfield galloped a solid round, the last six furlongs in 1.24. He is the likely favourite for the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. Agog was going very comfortably alongside Tractile over five furlongs in 1.3. Agog is on the up-grade and may be well supported next week. Sunny Blonde, a natural galloper, who is a little backward, 'ran a smart half-mile in 50s Under a pull, Hunting Star registered 53s for four furlongs. Speed as Jumper Speed, looking much better for his successful trip to Foxton, worked impressively. In the Hawke's Bay Hurdles he will have a solid following. The other morning Emotion, when sent to school over the hurdles, refused to jump. Garter Blue sprinted half a. mile in 51s. Lavina took 1.19 for a working gallop over six furlongs. Inheritance, Tudor Wench and Glenrossie finished as named at intervals over six furlongs in 1.18. Peter Beckford and The Grasper took the • same time, but, they were, under restraint throughout. Peter Beckford is perhaps the best hack in this district and after his one race at Hastings, ho will be sent to Wellington. Since winning in April, the full-brother •to Good Hunting has - greatly improved and gives every, .indication of developing into a first-class racehorse. Work at Qreenmeadowg At Greenmeadows, Lucullus Lad went Smoothly and easily over four furlongs in 51s. Watchers at this track consider that Hastings 'will need a tip-top novice to beat this three-year-old. Dostie, who is now back to her best, jumped three fences and. then covered six furlongs in 1.20. Pladie looks very well,. but was worked only at strong pace. He is engaged on the second day at .Hastings and is to contest the Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham next month. Queen's Salute, formerly a good galloper on the flat, who went wrong, gave a very impressive display over five hurdles. Queen's Salute displays great promise' as a jumper. Essex, a two-year-old owned by Mr. J. S. McLcod, ran three furlongs in 375, the best he has }'et accomplished. In his earlier racing he failed to show any dash, but he has progressed to such an extent with experience that his owner considers he lias a good chance of winning his second Derby next November. The same owner's now converted into ,a steeplechaser, took 1.50 for a mile. This well-connected gelding may make good as a jumper, Mata Hari broke, 1.7 for five furlongs. She was 'hever better.
