EX-EMPEROR'S JOURNEY
FAREWELL AT GIBRALTAR "POISON GAS DECIDED WAR". , (Received Juno 1, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, May 31 The ex-Emperor of Abyssinia, Haili Selassie, visited the sights of Gibraltar during his stay there. The News Chronicle's Gibraltar correspondent says that, though demonstrations were ofiicially discouraged, n small crowd warmly bade farewell to tho ex-Emperor on his embarking on the liner Or for d for England. Asked whether he would have made peace earlier if his hopes of successfully defending Abyssinia had not been encouraged by Britain, tho ex-Emperor emphatically answered, "No," adding: "Illegitimate methods of warfare like the destruction of Bed Cross units and the use of poison gas were the deciding factors."
A wireless message from tho Orford states that Haill Selassie, who will stay at tho Bitz Hotel, in London, had had tea in his suite with his family, and afterward came on deck while tho liner was passing through tho Strait of Gibraltar. Ho was formally received by tho captain in his stateroom.
