SEASON'S MAIZE CROP

BAY OF PLENTY DISTRICT LIGHTER YIELD ANTICIPATED [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHAKATANE, Monday The maize crop in the Bay of Plenty this season will be light, in the opinion of one authority. This is attributed to two causes, insufficient sunshine to perfect the growth and caterpillars. One paddock recently plucked and shelled gave only two-thirds of last season's yield. In another case a grower who planted 60 acres will be lucky if lie can harvest 30 acres. In some cases, however, satisfactory crops have been recorded where planting was done earlier than usual.

Taken all round, it is estimated that the Bay of Plenty yield will be about two-thirds of last year. On the other hand, the maize yield in Gisborne is expected to be the same as last year.
