BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP DOMINION PAIR DEFEATED [from our own correspondent] By Air Mail LONDON, Mny 13 C. E. Malfroy and A. C. Stedman, of New Zealand, holders of the British hard-court doubles tennis championship, lost their title at Bournemouth on May 2 to the English Davis Cup pair, G. P. Hughes and C. 11. D. Tuckev. They started off well against Hughes and Tuckey, winning the first set. After set-all, however, they just failed to capture the third set, and the Englishmen were far too good for them in the fourth.

There was some good play in this match, Tuckey's smashing, if at times unreliable, proving a big factor in his side's victory. The result was: —G. P. Hughes and C. I?. D. Tuckey beat C> 10. Malfroy and A. C. Stedman, 4—6, (3—2, 9—7, 6—l. For three sets the result looked uncertain, but the New Zealanders, once their hopes were dashed by the stubborn British resistance in the long third set, had to bow to a more thrustfill combination. Malfroy and and Stedman finished better than they began—the hard week told 011 them. Mallroy could not win enough service games, and off the deeper lobs he was smashing poorly. Stedman has strengthened his volleying. but neither lie nor his partner had the certainty of touch that Hughes revealed when it came to the crisis.
