FIFTY YEARS AGO

WATERFRONT RAILWAY

PROPOSAL OPPOSED •

Tho construction of a railway embankment over Hobson Bay apparently was contemplated half a century ago, nidging from the following item ■which* appeared in the New Zealand Herat/d of June 2, 1886: 4 'We understand that Mr. O. Street, of Judge's Bay, was yesterday busy getting signatures to the petition which has been prepared for transmission to the General Assembly in opposition to the proposed beach loop-line of railway from Auckland to Penrose. The petition sets forth that tho construction of such a railway line will be inflicting n deplorable injury to the city, as it will completely destroy the future marine esplanade and pleasure drive along* the shore of the harbour. The petitioners 'suggest that the loop-line requirement can best be provided for by taking it through the western side of the city."
